Congratulations to YLHS Very 1st Academic Decathlon Team - under the direction of Gabby Stephenson, for placing 5th overall in the county competition. Team members are: Matthew Liao, Joseph Toubbeh, Maggie Shi, Nikhil Patolia and William Russell. They received their award last Monday evening at the “2014-15 Orange County Academic Decathlon 9th & 10th Grade Overall Team” program. We have the plaque on display in the front office. YLHS – California Scholarship Federation - recognized and awarded cords and stoles to 59 seniors on Wednesday evening. Students and parents attended the awards program Wednesday evening in the YLHS library to recognize students participation in CSF and their high academic performance. A Big Thank You to CSF advisors, Angelina Atmadja and Theresa Maeder, for coordinating CSF at YLHS and hosting the presentation. Congratulations to all!!
A Big Thank You - to our PTSA and President, Kristen You, for their gift donations totaling $5,100. The monies will be used for:
• 1 Media Kit for Advanced Video Production, which will be used by the entire student body, for weekly Mustang Mix, rallies, the Yearbook DVD, etc. (not to exceed $3,000.00).
• 4 benches in various locations around campus (not to exceed $400.00).
• $500.00 to the library to be used on instructional materials.
It is great to have our PTSA support our school with their time, students and staff recognitions, along with financial gifts that support our programs!
Did You Hear? - PYLUSD was awarded $6 million by the California Career Pathway Trust Grant for the North Orange County Career Access Partnership. This grant will be used to strengthen articulation with local Community Colleges and expand career pathway opportunities at all of our high schools. Money from the grant has been allocated for YLHS to facilitate the overall focus in the “Mustang Business Academy”, incorporating Culinary Arts and Hospitality/Hotel Management under the umbrella of MBA – Mustang Business Academy with classes in Business Fundamentals and Accounting. Additional support for our Academy will be provided with staff training, technology, instructional supplies, clerical support and a two period CTE Academy Career Specialist. Site team members and district staff will be working together over the summer to plan the 2015-16 school year with new opportunities for our students. A Big Thank You to our very own, Jamie Jauch, and Director of Secondary Education, Cary Johnson, for preparing and submitting the grant application with the North Orange County Career Access Partnership consortium and bringing these funds to our district and our high school.
More Good News - Dan Eliot and Claudia Welch are working with Jeremy Powell, Director or Technology at our district to install every classroom with
• New LCD projector
• New Dell Optiplex classroom computers with 24” monitors/Updates on computers not updated last year
• 3 network switch upgrades
• 46 wireless access points
• 3 additional chromebook carts
Jeremy Powell’s team has scheduled August 12th, 13th & 14th to install new equipment and computers. Stay tuned for more information as we get it.
For Your Planning - We just received information for the start of the 2015-16 school year. Teachers will return August 27th for onsite meetings. Friday, August 28th and Monday, August 31st will be teacher prep days dedicated for classroom preparations. Students’ first day of classes is Tuesday, September 1st. (There will be no districtwide pre-service day.)
