¡Bienvenidos!
About Srta. Phelps
¡Mucho gusto! Nice to meet you, my name is Srta. Phelps, and I am incredibly honored to be your student's Spanish teacher this school year. A little bit about my background in learning the Spanish language and becoming a Spanish teacher: from a very young age I became fascinated with the idea of people being able to communicate in other languages. I started my journey learning Spanish in 9th grade, just like many of your students! Throughout my time in high school, I took learning Spanish very seriously, and I was very inspired by my teachers. During this time, I decided I wanted to become fluent and one day be a teacher myself, so that I could inspire students to see the value in being bilingual. After high school, I continued my education at California State University, Fullerton where I earned my bachelor's degree in Spanish, my California Single Subject Teaching Credential in World Languages, as well as a Bilingual Authorization (BCLAD). The 2024-2025 school year begins my fourth year as a Spanish teacher, and my second year as a Mustang here at Yorba Linda High School. As an educator, it is my teaching philosophy that learning a second or a third language greatly expands our world view, and allows us to be inspired by and have great love for languages and cultures that may be different from our own. It is my goal and aspiration to create a fun, engaging, challenging, and academically rich and rigorous environment for all of my students here at Yorba Linda High School.

Course Routine and Expectations
I teach both Spanish 1 and Spanish 2, and while these courses are academically different as far as curriculum and content, I like to keep a similar structure for both levels of Spanish. Typically, at the beginning of a new unit, we begin by introducing a new set of vocabulary. Over the course of 2-3 weeks, this vocabulary is intertwined with activities that harbor the development of all modes of communication within a language--speaking, writing, reading, and listening. Students will engage with the Spanish language to interpret, communicate interpersonally, as well as presentationally. We cover many grammatical topics, introduce cultural elements, and strive to incorporate real world examples of what it is like to understand and speak in Spanish. Technology is integrated into the course with programs such as Gimkit, Conjuguemos, Quizziz, etc., all which allow me to formally and informally assess the understanding of each student to guide further curriculum and instruction. Of course, each unit ends with a formal assessment that tackles each modality we practiced (vocab/writing, speaking, reading/listening). Students have homework on Monday - Thursday during the week, and it is always 20 minutes of Conjuguemos practice, with a varying degree of difficulty depending on how far we are into the unit. Please see the attached syllabi for each course level if you are interested in further classroom policy.
