Language Arts 1 Course Overview

Language Arts 1 is a one-year college-preparatory course in which literature is used as the basis for expanding upon current skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Class assignments and activities will be based on these areas, which encompass the Common Core State Standards for Language Arts (grades 9-10). Students will read and analyze selections in the genres of nonfiction, short story, drama, poetry, and the novel. We will be reading the following: Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

We will be reading the following: Animal Farm by George Orwell, Antigone by Sophocles, Night by Elie Wiesel, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, and The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.
